Since 1996, we have provided trail advocacy, education, and infrastructure for Nebraska and Western Iowa.
Who We Are
THOR is the International Mountain Biking Association Chapter for Nebraska and Western Iowa. Founded in 1996, THOR builds and maintains most natural surface trails and trail systems in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa through agreements with city, state, and other public and private land managers. Our education programs focus on youth trail users, land managers, and the building of sustainable nature surface trails.
Our Vision
Our vision is natural surface trail systems close to and integrated with communities that support active outdoor recreation for all ages, races, incomes, and abilities. We believe trails, connectivity with nature, and safe outdoor spaces create healthy and resilient children and adults and vibrant neighborhoods and are foundational in attracting and retaining families, employees, and businesses.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create and share the natural surface trail experience in Nebraska and Western Iowa through advocacy, education, and the building of sustainable and accessible trails.
Our Values
Community
Our work supports present and future generations' communities, wellness, economies, and public lands. We believe mountain biking and active outdoor lifestyles unite communities, keep neighborhoods healthy and diversified with strong economies, and protect and expand outdoor spaces.
Equity
We recognize that a strong community must be diverse—we encourage, embrace, and celebrate diversity and inclusion. We promote equity and inclusion amongst trail users and work toward increased trail access to ease entry into the sport of mountain biking. We want everyone to experience the joy of running, hiking, and cycling off-road.
Partnerships
Collaborations are vital to our success. We frame partnerships on shared values and common goals to change lives by building welcoming and inclusive communities of trail users. Our partners include cities, states, private landowners, neighborhoods, and community and philanthropic organizations.
Stewardship
We share a responsibility to protect our environment for its intrinsic value so communities can cherish the great outdoors. We promote sustainable trails and educate trail users to minimize environmental, natural resources, and wildlife impact.
How does THOR work?
Our work is driven by the community's mission and vision and guided by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Executive Director oversees THOR's staff and daily operations and reports to the Board of Directors.
